What kind of paint is best for you?

Oil or Water

These two types of paint use differ in how they bind to surfaces. This makes for unique characteristics that you may desire or want to avoid.

Oil-based paints are generally more affordable and durable. Oil paints have a better shelf life which means you can store your favorite color without it going nasty for much longer than a water-based look-a-like.
The advantage of shelf life comes with a longer drying time before one can apply a second coat. This is a fair trader considering the oil paint stay vibrant with color and quality for years longer than a faster drying water paint.

Water/latex
Now let's explore the advantages and disadvantages of water-based paints. Also known as latex paint, this base is generally more expensive and less durable, but why is it the more common choice for interior paint applications?
Their fast drying time means many jobs can be completed in a single day. This is mighty convenient. Clean-up is also much easier as water paint can be cleaned with water instead of toxic solvents. If you consider one's health to be a most important asset (& I severely hope it is to everyone reading this), then you will that water-based paints give off significantly less VOCs. This is a breath of (relatively) fresh air, physically and psychologically, to anyone near the painted space as it is drying.

Considerations for Paint Finishes

In this case, the 'finish' refers to the quality of the final coat, from matte to glossy. 

1. Flat/Matte: This is the least reflective option available. They get great coverage and usually require fewer coats to cover blemishes. It is also the least durable. This makes it best suited for ceilings and other low-impact areas. Probably not the best option for a busy doorway. This option is challenging to clean. Cleaners can alter the surface finish and leave a distinct mark. 

2. Eggshell: Eggshell is a popular choice for medium-traffic areas as they reside in the middle ground between durability and economy, flat and more lustrous.

3. Satin: This is the most popular interior finish. A true middle way between high-gloss and flat. Satin finish surfaces are easier to clean than flat and eggshell. They also reflect more light which can brighten up a space. This is also middle ground for economy in covering blemishes and applying multiple coats.

4. Semi-gloss: Highly durable, mildew resistant, and easy to clean, semi-gloss paint is a popular choice for window sills, door frames, and moist areas. Bathrooms, kitchens, and kid's rooms are often done in a semi-gloss because of the advantages in wear and tear resistance and washability. When choosing, remember that the glossier the paint, the more easily imperfections show.

5. High-gloss: This is the shiniest and most durable paint finish. Great for cabinets, door frames, window sills, and other surfaces that are touched almost every day. They can take regular scrubbing and clean easily. Painted tables and chairs are usually high-gloss because other finishes would deteriorate fast and stain quickly. High-gloss paints can be used outside with proper priming. Beware that this option will show imperfections most severely compared to the other options, so it s best to start with a smooth, primed surface.

​Oil paint is not water soluble. Brushes, drips & slips will not clean with water alone so one must use mineral spirits like turpentine if they want to effectively clean up wet oil paint. Avoid skin contact because mineral spirits and oil paint is toxic.
